2020 Warren Morris Sports Medicine Person of the Year Announced

Dr. Delan Gaines - Optim Orthopedics

The Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association has named Dr. Delan Gaines of Statesboro, GA as the recipient of the Warren Morris Sports Medicine Person of the Year Award. Dr. Gaines is part of Optim Orthopedics, serving as a team physician for Georgia Southern University and several high schools in southeast Georgia.

Known for his accessibility and willingness to help, Dr. Gaines is an excellent advocate for and mentor to athletic trainers. His approach to athlete care both on and off the field allows ATs to reach the full potential of their practice while providing guidance and direction. Dr. Gaines welcomes athletic trainers to consult with him both in the clinic and in the operating room, and he takes time to make each moment a teachable one by explaining his thought process in the plan of care for each injury. He is confident in his decisions and calm in times of turmoil – he understands that coaches and players want to lose as little time to injury as possible but he ensures that the health and overall best interests of the athletes remain at the forefront of the process – has earned the respect and admiration of all those who benefit from his support and care in southeast Georgia. He is the embodiment of all that the Warren Morris Sports Medicine Person of Year Award should represent.

I am honored to be awarded the Warren Morris Sports Medicine Person of the Year. Thank you to Georgia Southern University for letting me work with their student athletes and a huge thanks to the athletic trainers who keep everything running smoothly. I am grateful to the local high schools and Optim Healthcare System for recognizing the importance of athletic trainers in high school sports and working together to provide them. I am especially appreciative of my wife Brandi for taking care of our sons and home while I work with these talented people - you make everything possible. - Dr. Delan Gaines
