2020 Jerry Rhea Athletic Trainer of the Year Announced

The Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association has named Jeff Hopp of Marietta High School in Marietta, GA as the recipient of their Jerry Rhea Athletic Trainer of the Year Award for 2020.


With so many amazing athletic trainers in Georgia, I am honored to be selected as this year’s GATA’s Jerry Rhea Athletic Trainer of the Year. To say it is humbling to be chosen for an award named after Jerry Rhea is an understatement. I would like to thank those who supported my nomination and the Honors and Awards committee for this honor. - Jeff Hopp

Jeff is respected by his peers as a stellar athletic trainer, mentor, and advocate for the profession at all levels. He has built a solid athletic training program at Marietta High School, starting from the ground up, and provides not only outstanding care to the MHS athletes but also an opportunity for students to learn more about athletic training and gain skills that will carry them into future careers in the profession. Jeff’s passion for athletic training extends off the field, as he has served on the GATA Executive Board, SEATA Executive Board, Georgia Brain Injury Trust, and the GHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. He is known for his drive and determination to always be better and do better, his commitment to provide quality healthcare, and his exemplary professionalism as a representative of athletic training and the GATA.



The award is named for Jerry Rhea, longtime head athletic trainer with the Atlanta Falcons and a pioneering force in the profession of athletic training in Georgia. Individuals receiving the honor must be a certified/licensed athletic trainer and also demonstrate exemplary service to the athletic training profession in Georgia.

The Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association is an organization committed to the education of its members and enhancement of the profession of athletic training, leading to better healthcare for the population which it serves. The GATA is proudly composed of over 1000 licensed athletic trainers – ranging from professional, collegiate, and high school teams to industries, physician offices, and rehabilitation clinics – all working together to promote and practice the profession of athletic training within the state of Georgia.
