The Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association (GATA) has announced the recipients of the Lori Mobley Groover Leadership Awards, intended to recognize graduate students as they pursue a career in athletic training while exhibiting passion and enthusiastic leadership. The awards include a scholarship and are named in honor of Lori Mobley Groover, a past president of the GATA who passed away in 2009.
Katie Riney (University of North Georgia) is currently working for the Vereen Center as an athletic trainer for Berrien High School. Katie strives to be an athletic trainer who is always wanting to learn and grow so to position herself to give back to the profession of athletic training. She stands out for her reliability and strong sense of responsibility, as well as her calmness under pressure. Katie communicates with ease and is never hesitant to ask questions if it will make her better and create better outcomes for her athletes. Katie will continue her career with PT Solutions working in the clinic setting and is excited for the opportunity to grow her skills in that direction.
Tiffany Roberts (University of North Georgia) is currently working for the Vereen Center as an athletic trainer for Colquitt County High School. Tiffany’s passion for the field and commitment to service are evident in her interactions with athletes and staff as well as the positive energy she pours into every task. She prioritizes creating a safe space for her athletes, and she fills that space with open communication, collaboration, and a commitment to providing the best possible care. Tiffany will be pursuing a doctorate at the University of Florida and plans to one day educate the next generation of athletic trainers.
The Honors and Awards Committee selects the recipients based on academic record, athletic training experience, and an essay. Each student application must also include a recommendation from a certified athletic trainer (ATC) who supervises the student. The GATA has long maintained a student scholarship program, but it was renamed to honor Groover in 2010. Riney and Roberts received their awards at the Honors & Awards Ceremony on June 4th as part of the recent GATA Annual Meeting and Symposium in Columbus.
